Silent Book Club
Welcome to Introvert Happy Hour!
Silent Book Club ® is a global community of readers, with more than 1000 chapters in 50 countries around the world led by local volunteers. SBC members gather in public at bars, cafes, bookstores, libraries, and online to read together in quiet camaraderie.
Silent Book Club started in San Francisco in 2012 with a couple of friends reading in companionable silence at our neighborhood bar. We loved books, and reading with friends, but most of our previous attempts at book clubs had fizzled out.
Often with traditional book clubs there's the scramble to finish the selected book, and the pressure to have something smart to say. Wouldn't it be great to have a book club where you could just enjoy books, friends, and snacks—without any homework?
At Silent Book Club, there's no assigned reading. All readers are welcome—ebooks, audiobooks, textbooks, comic books... it's BYOBook. Friends and strangers gather at a set time and location, enjoy food or drinks, share what they're reading, and settle in for an hour of silent, sustained reading. At the end of the hour, attendees can socialize—or not!
Silent Book Club is about community. Everyone is welcome! Read more here.
How it Works
The library will provide a comfortable gathering place with snacks. We'll also have a book display that you can choose a book from. Or bring your own. Everyone turns phones to silent.
6:30-7:00pm - People arrive, choose snacks, share what they're reading (verbally or on paper)
7:00-8:00pm - Quiet reading hour
8:00-8:30pm - Optional socializing
There's no pressure to socialize or discuss your book. Just enjoy some quiet time with no distractions or obligations--just reading.
